10 St. Patrick's Day Family Activities

Having discovered the true story behind St. Patrick's Day, I decided to do some fun activities with my children that illustrate the real story behind the man who followed God's call to carry the gospel to Ireland.

Here are 8 ideas you can do with your children.

1. Hanging Trinity Shamrocks.

I cut hearts out of green paper, and on each one wrote Father, Son and Holy Spirit

I did half of them in English and half in Croatian

Then I put one together to show Robi what it should look like.

umm....sorry so blurry1

Remember, it's not about what the final outcome looks like, it's the process and what the child learns in the process. They don't care if it looks perfect or not, they enjoy the experience of gluing and putting the project together!

2. Playdough Trinity Shamrocks

This is pretty self explanatory.  You just need green playdough and a heart shaped cookie cutter.

I'm not sure how well this concept was grasped...

Here are some other ideas that I can't wait to try out this week!

3. Shamrock Cookies

Make some green sugar cookie dough and cut out heart shapes. Make shamrocks out of the hearts and bake.  You can decorate them with green sprinkles.

4. Shamrock Badges

Cut 3 hearts out of white paper and glue them together in the shape of a shamrock. Provide green materials: crayons, markers and collage material (decorative paper, yarn, etc) and let everyone decorate the shamrock.  On St. Patrick's day you can pin it on your shirt with a safety pin.

5. Shamrock Ice Cream

You can do this with pistachio or mint chocolate chip ice cream.  Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out 3 scoops of ice cream and arrange in the shape of a shamrock and serve.
6. Shamrock hunt

If you have clover where you live, go on a shamrock hunt.  Afterward, use a clover to share the concept of the Trinity with your children like St. Patrick did.

7. Shamrock Juice

Make some lemonade and add food coloring to make it green.

8. Thumbprint Shamrocks

Using green paint, make shamrocks with thumbprints

9. Shamrock soup

Serve cream of broccoli or split pea soup and call it "Shamrock soup"!

10. Veggie Tales St. Patrick's Day Story

I love this cute and entertaining illustration of the real St. Patrick
